Hey guys! Today we are discussing the importance of an About Me page on your blog, what you should include on it, and how to write it strategically to gain interested and loyal readers! You all are probably comfortable with the idea of an About Me page, and I don’t doubt that most of you already have one living on your blogs. But, many times, the About Me page gets over looked by bloggers. However, it’s usually the first page a reader goes to. So, why is there a discrepancy? And more importantly, what can we, as bloggers, do to fix it?
YOUR ABOUT ME PAGE TELLS READERS WHY THEY SHOULD STICK AROUND
Instead of telling your readers how you are a coffee addict, pizza eater, Netflix addict, mom, sister, best friend, wife, etc… you should be telling them why they should stick around. Although it’s fun to get personal with your readers, the first paragraph of your About Me page is not the place to do so. When you go to a website, what makes you stay? Is it the fact that the author of the site loves dogs, or is it because the website serves you something or solves a problem you have? I am guessing you’re thinking the latter. Sit down and really think about how your blog serves your readers. What problems of theirs does it solve? If you are a fashion blogger, maybe it helps them get out of their style rut. Maybe it offers affordable outfit ideas or sporty/ edgy/ trendy inspiration. Do you write about the newest trends? Do you write about how girl’s can up their own wardrobe? Let them know that’s what you do! Here is a screenshot of my first paragraph of my About Me page on Poised Avenue:
Note how I let them know that Poised Avenue is an online portal to all things fashion, recipes, DIY, travel, and more. I tell them what they can expect when they come to Poised Avenue. Side note: adding credibility to your first paragraph is a major plus, do it if you can. Is your blog featured on a larger, well known website Have you been awarded anything for blogging? Let them know!
ONCE YOU’VE LET YOUR READERS KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT AND HOW YOUR BLOG SERVES THEM, INTRODUCE YOURSELF
Your readers now have an idea of what your blog is all about. They know clearly if your blog is for them and if they’d like to stick around and continue coming back. So, now is the best time to introduce yourself! Here is the fun part, where you can tell them if you are a coffee drinker or if you have 5 cats. Because this part of your About Me page is so personal, there is not much to lecture on. But, here are a few screen shots of what I decided to include:
I introduce why I started blogging and why I continue blogging, as well as a few personal details about me. My interests, my favorites, and the current trends in my own life. This is where you really can get as creative as you want!
Once you have those two major sections completed for your About Me page, now we can easily incorporate a snippet of it to other areas of your blog or social media accounts using something called an elevator pitch. An elevator pitch was first introduced to me by the wonderful Julie Solomon (check her out here). But, basically, an elevator pitch is a short sentence or two that sums up your About Me page. It should be short enough to say completely in one elevator ride, hence the name. You can incorporate your elevator pitch in the sidebar of your blog or in the headers/ bios of your social medias. Basically, it includes any credibility you may have and what your blog serves your readers (most importantly). You want it to clearly explain you and your blog in a quick and meaningful way. If someone were to ask what you did, it would be the perfect answer. For example, it could read, “New York Time’s best selling author offering fun summer reads for teens” or “Blogging expert featured on Huffington Post offering blogging tips for the newbie blogger”. If you don’t have major credibility, just toot your own horn a bit. Saying something like, “blogging expert” or “fashion virtuoso” also create a sense of credibility in your readers and works the same way! My elevator pitch is, “A California based blogger and fashion virtuoso delivering affordable everyday style inspiration.”.
DON’T FORGET PICTURES!
You know what they say, a picture says a thousand words. You want your readers to know exactly who is behind all the content on your blog… give them a face to remember you by! You can put just one photo on the top of the page, or multiple photos throughout. I would recommend the photo to be a professional, clear headshot. It can simply be of your beautiful face smiling or an action shot helping to further set the tone of your blog. For example, maybe your photo could be of you sitting at your desk with your blog open on the computer behind you or, if you’re a fashion blogger, you in your favorite outfit. The possibilities are endless!
